The Romanian language – characteristics and spread

Romanian is a Romance language, and a member of the Indo-European language family.

Romanian is spoken by approximately 28 million native speakers, the majority of whom live in Romania and Moldova. Moldovan is the official language of Moldova, and is largely identical to Romanian except for the name.

Romania has a population of over 21.7 million and about 19.4 million native speakers, and Moldova has a population of 4.5 million with around 3.9 million native speakers. Romanian has around 4.5 million native speakers outside of Romania and Moldova, with Romanian spoken locally and among family members by minorities in Ukraine, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Hungary. There are also Romanian colonies in the USA, Canada, South America, Australia, Israel, Turkey, and several Western European countries, and in Asia by Moldovans in Siberia, Kazakhstan, and Krasnodar region.
