The French language – characteristics and spread

French belongs to the Italic branch of the Romance group in the Indo-European language family, and is related to Italian, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, and Romanian amongst others.

French is a world language spoken by more than a hundred million speakers in more than fifty countries, and is used as an official language in France, Canada, Haiti, and many countries in Central Africa; French is also widely used in North Africa and Arabic-speaking countries as a second language.

In addition, French is one of the official languages of the EU, the official language of the African Union and organisation of American States, and one of the six official languages and one of the two working languages of the United Nations (UN) along with English.
