The Greek language – characteristics and spread

Greek is an Indo-European language, and forms a separate branch of the language family. Ancient Greek as used in ancient times and still taught in school and Modern Greek as spoken today in Greece are different graduations of the Greek language.

Greek has a written tradition going back 3,400 years; no other existing language apart from Chinese has such a long written record.

Western culture was heavily influenced by the culture of ancient Greece. Some of the most important works of world history, such as the writings of Plato and Aristotle and the New Testament, were all written in Greek. A wide variety of ancient Greek words have found their way into modern languages.
