The Albanian language – characteristics and spread

Albanian is mostly spoken in Albania, Kosovo, in some other parts of Serbia and Montenegro as well as Macedonia, and occupies its own branch within the Indo-European language family.

A total of seven and a half million people worldwide speak Albanian, including around 3.4 million in Albania itself, 2.5 million in other Balkan countries, and more than a million in the rest of the world.

The Latin alphabet has been used exclusively since 1908, but Albanian used to be written in Greek and Arabic script before that.
